Gold prices in India fell sharply on Thursday, 22 October 2026, extending the recent slide. The benchmark 24K gold rate dropped to ₹1,44,380 per 10 grams (₹14,438 per gram), down ₹1,700 per 10 grams from Wednesday’s ₹1,46,080. 22K gold, the purity most commonly used for jewellery, slipped to ₹1,32,350 per 10 grams (₹13,235 per gram), down ₹1,550 from ₹1,33,900. 18K gold stood at ₹1,08,290 per 10 grams.

The fall mirrored weak global cues. International spot gold declined about 1.2 per cent to around $4,090 per ounce, while COMEX gold futures slipped 0.49 per cent to $4,129.60 an ounce, according to market reports on Thursday.

Why gold prices are falling

Bullion is under pressure from rising crude oil prices and growing expectations that the US Federal Reserve could keep interest rates higher. Brent crude rose about 1.2 per cent to $110.11 a barrel and US WTI gained 1 per cent to $98.12 after fresh attacks in West Asia by Yemen’s Houthi group in Saudi Arabia prompted the United States to order some diplomats and their families to leave its missions in the Kingdom, CNBC TV18 reported.

Higher energy prices feed inflation worries, and because gold pays no interest, it tends to lose appeal when rate-hike expectations rise. Markets are now watching the Fed’s policy meeting on October 27–28 for fresh clues on the direction of interest rates.

Domestically, a stronger rupee added to the downward pull. The rupee appreciated 48 paise to close at 94.43 against the US dollar on Wednesday, supported by Reserve Bank of India intervention — and a stronger rupee makes dollar-denominated gold cheaper for Indian buyers, all else being equal.

Festive season context

The correction arrives just ahead of the festive buying season — Dhanteras falls on 6 November 2026. Gold is correcting this year after hitting a record ₹1.60 lakh per 10 grams in 2025, which has brought some relief to buyers planning festive purchases, as domestic demand is also supporting the market.

Silver also declined, tracking weakness in the white metal internationally. Silver fell ₹5,000 to ₹2,25,000 per kilogram (₹2,250 per 10 grams), in line with international silver slipping to around $56.39 an ounce.

Buyers usually keep an eye on the dollar–rupee rate and international bullion moves in the days ahead, as domestic gold rates closely track both.
