The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), at the end of the year will establish a formal standard for the new type of SIM cards – nanoSIM, developed with German company Giesecke & Devrient announced in November. nanoSIM have dimensions of 12 x 9 mm, ie map is approximately one-third less than the size of microSIM. There are reports that the first mobile phones and smartphones supporting nanoSIM will appear in 2012. The new type of SIM card can be used in existing mobile devices through special adapters.
