The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), at the end of the year will establish a formal standard for the new type of SIM cards – nanoSIM, developed with German company Giesecke & Devrient announced in November. nanoSIM have dimensions of 12 x 9 mm, ie map is approximately one-third less than the size of microSIM. Compared with the traditional SIM card size had decreased by 60 percent, while the cards and have become 15% thinner. There are reports that the first mobile phones and smartphones supporting nanoSIM will appear in 2012. The new type of SIM card can be used in existing mobile devices through special adapters. The expected emergence of nanoSIM will give manufacturers the opportunity to reduce the thickness of phones and free space in them for additional electronic components. Samples of the new SIM cards are now available for testing.
