Microsoft has detailed the mechanism for future updating of Windows 8. Usually, we receive notices an update is available, once you click to install, you are prompted to restart after this process.
This is the chronology of what will happen in Windows 8 for updates:
- A message on the next reboot is displayed on the login screen for three days or until the computer is restarted (whichever comes first). This means we now have three days to restart the computer at your convenience. All you need do is see the login screen once every 3 days to see the message on next reboot and default lock screen will timeout after 15 minutes.
- In addition to notification of restart at login screen, the power options in the lock screen will change to “Update and restart” immediately on days two and three changes to “Update and off” so that the message is even more apparent to you. This allows you to restart your computer to your own convenience.
- If after three days, the reset has not occurred, then WU will automatically restart the computer for you. In this case, automatic restart will happen either at the end of the grace period of three days, or, to avoid data loss if WU detects no critical applications open at the end of the grace period of three days, it will hope that resets automatically the next time you enter.
- Produced the restart, the message on the login screen will disappear and return energy options to the original settings. We know that people want to automatically log on after the break, but we recommend you not to, given the potential security problems with this configuration.
